We Love Cafe 85

What do people in China eat for breakfast?
This morning Stu and I were on the hunt. Naturally, the first thing I thought was: need Starbucks. The Starbucks prices are VERY high in Shanghai:
$3.50 US for coffee
$5.50 US for caramel Machiatto

Everything else we saw was lunch and dinner places. It was about 10:00 so we figured breakfast should still be going on. We wandered around for another half hour, not finding anything but signs we didn't understand, lots of KFC and a couple pizza hut's.

We finally decided to stop and ask someone at an Expo Information counter who spoke broken english and was very nice. He said to us immediately after he heard the word food "You like KFC?" (we were asking him where a grocery store was) and after him asking many people for us, he walked all the way there beside us.
And that's when we found....
Cafe 85.

MMM! Never before had we been in such a delicious bakery! (and so cheap!!) But then again, maybe we were delirious from hunger. We bought five things and chowed down.
Iced coffee at Cafe 85 was a dollar. Muuuuch better (and surprisingly tasty!)

After that we wandered the streets of downtown for hours and then we discovered a beautiful park! It was gigantic. Bigger than Stanley park and SO MAGICAL! Right in the middle of the rush of Shanghai: tranquility!

It was so gorgeous and so fun! We loved it! There were people playing weird instruments and people crowded around each other playing weird games and then I saw the greatest thing I've ever seen! It was an outdoor workout centre, right there in the middle of the park! There were gazelle freestyles, eliptical trainers, leg presses, and more! They were made out of metal and were painted colourfully and were awesome! I played on those things for quite a while and I think Stuart may have liked it more than he claimed, too!

We spent probably a good hour by the water sun tanning and looking at the weird fish that looked like poop. I absolutely LOVED that park.

We spent about an hour back at our hostel after that to get out of the sun.

Next we wandered around again looking for a good dinner spot. Of course, on our way we found another Cafe 85 and just HAD to have something to tide us over.

We found a great place... don't remember what it was called, but they took our money before we got our meal, which we obviously weren't accustom to, and they took it away for a while before bringing us our change... another thing we have to get used to. We had pot sticker and fried potato curry patties as an appetizer and volcano (very spicy!) pork with noodles, cucumber, and beansprouts to share as our main course. At a nice restaurant and all for $10.00 (and tipping is not customary, either) It was totally delicious! By the end of the day we were jet lagged and exhausted (7:00pm)

We were going to go for a run to the Bund which is supposed to be amazing at night and a big tourist hot spot, but we 'had a nap' and next thing we knew it was 5:15 am! (I think we needed it badly!)

This morning we are refreshed and ready for a run and a new breakfast place! :)
